Black Flag’s new “Gen Z” lineup has made its onstage debut.
The group played its first gig on Tuesday (June 10th) at Mixtape 5, a club in Sofia, Bulgaria, running through a lengthy set that clocked in at nearly 90 minutes. The show launched the revamped punk act’s European tour.
As previously reported, the legendary hardcore band’s founding guitarist Greg Ginn announced that Black Flag now had an overhauled lineup and new music was on the way. He later unveiled a press photo alongside his new bandmates — vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez, and drummer Bryce Weston — all very young compared to the 71-year-old Ginn.

“We’re turning the page,” read the initial announcement post from the band. “BLACK FLAG is entering a new era — and we’re hyped to welcome three incredible new members… the new lineup is already in the studio and the rehearsal space — writing, jamming, and bringing fresh energy.”
Not surprisingly, fan footage of the set in Bulgaria has a definite School of Rock cover-band vibe considering the age gap between Ginn and the rest of his ensemble, who appear to give a spirited performance. Still, staple songs such as “Six Pack” and “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie” are recognizable and tight enough to get the crowd going, while Ginn’s guitar tone is as sharp as it ever was.
The European tour runs through June, with US dates along the West Coast and Southwest set for August. Get tickets here.
