YouTube’s huge new thumbnail change has viewers wanting to ‘punch their screens’

YouTube is working on updating how thumbnails appear on the site and it’s a massive change, quite literally.

Google-owned YouTube is no stranger to experimentation with new tests always being conducted for new features, AI capabilities and more.

Not every test is well-recieved, though. For instance, the site began experimenting with displaying comments in a Reddit-style format and viewers quickly blasted the change.

Now, YouTube has once again began to try out an update to how thumbnails are displayed and it’s resulting in even more backlash.

YouTube’s big thumbnail update panned by viewers

As spotted by Android Authority, YouTube users began to see giant sized thumbnails pop up on their homepages.

“Why are the thumbnails suddenly huge?” a viewer wrote on Reddit. “This is 100% zoom as well, I just went on YouTube, and suddenly the thumbnails are absurdly large for no reason. Is this a bug, or is this a new UI design.”

An attached screenshots shows gigantic thumbnails with just two videos appearing in each row, taking up most of the screen.

Others were infuriated by this change with many baffled by Google’s decision making.

“I was about to go completely mad. What the hell is YouTube even doing with a 2×1 thumbnail layout? They must be trolling, no?” one pondered.

Some commented on how browser extensions and plugins helped solve the issue and revert the thumbnails to their previous, smaller-sized and more appreciated state.

“It’s crazy that a f**king extension does a better job than a multi-billion dollar company,” a user quipped.

“I wanted to punch my screen,” another chimed in.

Given the response to this test, don’t be surprised to see YouTube rethink this UI change. After all, it’s not like users had any major complaints with the way the homepage looked before this latest update.
