YouTube is about to surpass Disney as the world’s biggest media company, according to a Wall Street analyst.
Google purchased YouTube back in 2006 for 1.65bn dollars and has spent almost two decades growing the company to become one of the biggest brands in the media industry.
In 2024, YouTube brought home over $36 billion in advertisement revenue amid efforts to prevent users from using adblock on the platform. That doesn’t include YouTube Premium subscriptions and other sources of income, either.
According to a report from Deadline, Wall Street Analyst Michael Nathanson says YouTube is set to become the biggest media company in the world, surpassing Disney in the process.
YouTube’s revenue may surpass Disney in 2025
YouTube’s total revenue almost doubled what it brought in through just ads with a massive $54.2 billion in revenue during 2024.
Because of its massive viewership, which has doubled over the likes of Disney and other media giants, the analyst says YouTube could bring in more money than Disney by the end of 2025.
“YouTube is also positioned to become the home for all things video,” he said in his report.
Nathanson says that his evaluation is based on the company’s dominance across “three key buckets” that include YouTube Premium and Music, YouTube TV, and “other,” which includes channel memberships, VOD, and creator monetization tools.
YouTube has a long way to go before reaching Disney’s total level of revenue, however. In 2024, the Walt Disney Company brought home $91.36 billion over all of its avenues of income.
This prediction comes as the Google-owned company continues to make improvements to the platform in a plethora of ways. On March 31, YouTube changed how views on Shorts videos are counted, making it more like Instagram and TikTok in the process.
