It was a bit hard to imagine there was any way Fyre Festival 2 could be more of a disaster than the first one based on what transpired during that ill-fated gathering. However, the sequel is giving it a run for its money after officials in the city where it’s supposedly being held denied that’s actually the case after a similar situation forced the event to relocate.
By now, I feel like most people are familiar with the story of the unmitigated debacle that was Fyre Festival and the series of events that led to Billy McFarland landing in prison for defrauding attendees and investors out of $26 million.
McFarland became a free man in 2022 and didn’t waste much time attempting to mount a comeback. He announced his intentions to spearhead Fyre Festival 2 the following year, and while it took a while for details to surface, a website featuring ticket packages ranging from $1,400 to $1.1 million officially launched in 2024.
That website initially said Fyre Festival 2 would be held on Isla Mujeres, a Mexican island off the coast of Cancun, from May 30th to June 2nd this year. However, things took what was both a strange and incredibly on-brand turn when officials tasked with overseeing the permits you need to throw that kind of event claimed they had no knowledge of its existence.
McFarland swiftly pushed back against that assertion, but it’s safe to assume there’s a reason Fyre Festival 2 abandoned its plans to descend upon a seemingly unsuspecting Isla Mujeres by announcing it would actually be held in Playa del Carmen, the resort town located around a two-hour drive south of Cancun.
Fyre Festival 2 is still slated to get underway less than two months from now, but we’ve been treated to yet another twist in the saga.
According to Rolling Stone, the government of Quintana Roo, the Mexican state where Playa del Carmen is located, issued a press release that firmly shut down the notion it will be playing host to Fyre Festival 2, saying:
“Neither this event nor any event with its name will occur in our city.
After looking over the information around the situation, we can confirm that there have been no registrations, planning, or conditions to indicate that this will happen in our municipality.”
It sounds like things are going great!
