One of the biggest mysteries in Yellowjackets is from the show’s very first scene. Every fan wants to know the identity of the dark-haired girl who fell into a pit while wearing Jackie’s necklace, affectionately known as “Pit Girl.” The first two episodes of season three don’t give us an answer to the oft-asked question, “Who is Pit Girl?” But Yellowjackets does introduce us to what must be that infamous pit in episode one of season three, giving the iconic location an origin story in the world. We don’t know how the pit came to be in the Yellowjackets‘ woods yet, but we do know how the team discovers it.
Episode one of Yellowjackets season three reveals that Coach Ben did indeed survive the winter. He sets traps for small game and works hard to avoid the girls for good reason. They would probably try to kill him on sight. Coach hits the jackpot one lovely spring day by stumbling onto a hidden planks of wood in the ground. He breaks them open and finds a pit with several emergency kits full of food and supplies. After coming up with a way to drag the containers back to his cave, he covers it back up, intending to use it as a trap for deer. Yes, Coach Ben has discovered Yellowjackets‘ pit location, bringing us one step closer to someone’s murder.
Meanwhile, Shauna and Mari’s constant tension comes to a head during dinner in Yellowjackets’ season three premiere. Natalie lays down the law and says they are both confined to their tents after the two get into a fight. Mari feels like it is unfair, considering Shauna started it by spitting in her soup. She angrily storms into the dark woods like the dummy she is. It is there where she has the misfortune of falling into the now open pit lying in wait. It is widely speculated that Mari is the Pit Girl from the very first scene of Yellowjackets, and maybe this is not very subtle foreshadowing. But we doubt the show would make it so obvious.
Besides Lottie, who obviously didn’t die in the woods, there are a couple of other brunette girls like Gen, who could be Pit Girl other than Mari. Mari’s near-miss with the pit in these early episodes of Yellowjackets season three really does make us feel less convinced she is Pit Girl. Maybe we will finally get the answer to the question of Pit Girl’s identity later this season. Or maybe we will get more Pit Girl foreshadowing and fakeouts. Either way, introducing the pit in the first episodes of Yellowjackets season three seems to underscore it will become important this season.
Coach Ben finds Mari the next morning and guides her through popping her dislocated knee into place. He comes up with a way to help her get out of the pit before promptly taking her hostage. It makes sense from his perspective, considering the girls have lost their minds and think he is the one who burned the house down. For now, Coach Ben isn’t sure what he will do with her, but he surely doesn’t want the girls finding out where he’s living. Either way, we know that the Yellowjackets girls will discover the pit and set up deadly spikes in it for catching prey… and killing each other.
