X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is launching an X Money side of things where users can request payment from others – but there will be a few catches.
Back in October 2022, Elon Musk finally completed his long-rumored purchase of Twitter, buying the social media platform for $44 billion. It didn’t take the Tesla and SpaceX boss long to start making some sweeping changes.
Twitter and the classic blue bird logo were dumped as the platform was renamed to X. The old verification system was done away with, Spaces and videos have become bigger, and Grok AI is now implemented for every user.
Musk has also announced that the platform will also move into banking – similar to how he was involved with PayPal – by starting up X Money. The platform has already linked up with Visa to become X Money’s first partner, but thats not all.
X Money requirements for users
Now, as 2025 has started rolling on, X Money is becoming a reality, with some users already able to see the requirements to be able to use it.
As per Nima Owji, users will be required to be over the age of 18, be a resident of the United States, have a verified US phone number, and a security key or authentication app. This is all before your X account, which needs to be “in good standing” and “allowed.”
There are no concrete details as to what “in good standing” means, but presumably, you can’t have been banned a few times or be labeled as a spam bot.
Additionally, X Money will seemingly give you interest on the money you deposit – like a savings account. You will also be able to request money from other users.
This new branch of things could operate like PayPal or Venmo where you are able to request money for services after the fact. However, things are vague on that front, but select users have had similar options for a while through donations and subscriptions.
The rollout of the new service is not yet in motion. The official X Money account just says it is “launching in 2025,” but that’ll change when things get closer.
