On Tuesday, June 11, Wynton Marsalis stopped in at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club to deliver his first performance of the 2024 Blue Note Jazz Festival. Alongside an all-star lineup of some of the biggest names in jazz, soul, hip-hop, MPB, funk, alt-rock, folk and everything in between, Marsalis will make his way around the city this summer, delivering a total of six performances for the series. For this first date, the artist sat among the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra that he regularly leads, re-situating the large band in the smaller club for an intimate encounter with the trumpeter’s post-bop and classical-inflected straight-ahead jazz style. The artist’s accompanying 14-piece arrangement included woodwind specialist Victor Goines, saxophonist Abdias Armenteros, pianist Dan Nimmer, percussionist Obed Calvaire, trombonist Chris Crenshaw and trumpeter Kenny Rampton, among others.
Marsalis will take the Blue Note stage again this weekend for three performances with the bold, stripped-back Future of Jazz Septet. For tickets and more information, visit bluenotejazz.com/nyc/.
