Will Smith released one of the worst new songs of the summer. However, ‘Pretty Girls‘ is actually a banger when played at a different tempo, so he might actually know what he is doing.

This might be a remix play…

Smith is more focused on his music than acting these days. He dropped his fifth studio album at the end of March and will soon embark on his headlining tour, which kicks off in Morocco on June 25. His latest release sounds nothing like smash hits ‘Summertime,’ ‘Miami’ or ‘Getting Jiggy Wit It.’ It is objectively terrible.

The entire premise of ‘Pretty Girls’ is that Will Smith likes… pretty girls. He sings (raps? talks?) about his love for all women, no matter the size, shape or color. Even though the 56-year-old is technically still married to Jada Pickett Smith, they have something of an open relationship so he is free to discuss other women however he may please. Especially considering that it is all for “show” anyway.

To me, ‘Pretty Girls’ is a bad attempt to relate to the youth. It feels more like Smith wants to go viral on TikTok than reach the top of the charts. Maybe that’s just me. I am not a fan.

HOWEVER… a man by the name of Michael Christmas opened my eyes to an alternate reality. He suggested that Will Smith’s new song is not very good because it is at the wrong tempo and he is absolutely right. Stay with me here!

First, go back and listen to the song at 0.75X speed to start. The song, especially the beat, flows so much better — but the mixing is obviously off because it is not in the original tempo.

With that established, go back and listen to ‘Pretty Girls’ at 1.25X speed. It goes so hard!

My thought is this: maybe Will Smith dropped this song with hopes that DJs will use it in remixes and mashups. The beat itself is pretty catchy. The lyrics are bouncy, repetitive and simple. There is more than enough there on which to build.

I actually found myself bouncing my head along to the beat at 1.25X. It’s a tempo thing! Why did nobody catch this before it was released? Unless it was on purpose…
