Why is ‘Garfield dead’ trending?

The phrase ‘Garfield dead’ began trending on X, as many users tweeted their reaction to the death of the cartoon cat.

It all started on June 5, 2024, when a Garfield fan account tweeted a message posing as the cat’s fictional owner Jon, and announcing that Garfield had passed away.

@GarfieldFanArt tweeted, “Hi guys, Jon here. Garfield passed away in his sleep last night after eating at an Olive Garden buffet earlier in the night.

“It was sudden and we’re still in shock. I don’t know how this could have happened, but I just didn’t want you guys to be left in the dark. Thank you.”

The tweet was viewed over six million times and received over one thousand replies from Garfield fans reacting to the so-called news.

“On a Tuesday? And we all thought Mondays were the problem,” one user replied, referencing Garfield’s iconic hatred for Mondays.

A second user added, “They f**king killed Garfield.”

Others were not fooled so easily by the unofficial account. A third user said, “Haha. nice try Jon, Olive Garden doesn’t have buffets.”

When was Garfield created?

Garfield first appeared in a comic strip by Jim Davis in 1978. The comic premiered in 41 newspapers across the United States.

Davis told The Guardian that he named the cartoon character after his grandfather, James Garfield Davis.

He said his grandfather was “a rather stern and intimidating person, but he had these really kind eyes – he was a teddy bear.”

By 1983, over a thousand papers were running the Garfield comic strip.

In 2002, the comic broke the Guinness World Record for the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.

Since its inception, the orange tabby has taken on nine lives of its own.

Garfield has starred in several movies, including 2024’s The Garfield Movie. He is voiced by Chris Pratt.

Since 1983, Garfield has also been a mainstay at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Davis continues to work on new Garfield comic strips.
