BILLIONAIRE Elon Musk and singer Grimes had a turbulent romance over the course of their relationship.
The two called it quits on numerous occasions before splitting for good in 2022.
Why did Elon Musk and Grimes break up?
Elon Musk and Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, began dating around May 2018.
After three years of dating on and off, the pair confirmed their split in September 2021.
In an interview with Page Six, Elon revealed the two haven’t fully broken up but are “semi-separated.”
“We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms,” he told the outlet.
Their split was due to Elon’s busy work schedule between SpaceX and Tesla.
“It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or travelling overseas and her work is primarily in LA,” he said.
After the announcement, Grimes blasted the billionaire as “immature.”
However, in March 2022, Grimes told Vanity Fair that her and Musk have a “fluid” relationship.
She said: “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid.
“We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time.”
But after the interview was published, Grimes took to Twitter to confirm that the two had broken up again.
However, in 2024, the two still seem to be friends via social media.
Grimes shared a clip from a video game she is featured on, to which Elon responded: “Cool concept for an irl performance.”
The Genesis singer replied: “True – could be sick with projection mapping.”
How many children do Elon Musk and Grimes have?
During their on-and-off relationship, Elon and Grimes welcomed three children.
On May 4, 2020, the two welcomed their first son named X Æ A-Xii. His name has a special meaning for the former couple.
X is the unknown variable often seen in mathematics, while Æ refers to the elven spelling of Ai, which is short for Artificial Intelligence and also means love in Japanese.
A-Xii is the couple’s favorite Lockheed aircraft and precursor to an SR-17, better known as Blackbird.
A year later, Elon and Grimes welcomed a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl, who goes by Y, via surrogate in December 2021.
Like her brother’s unique name, Y also has significance.
Exa relates to the computer term exaFLOPS while Dark refers to the “beautiful mystery of our universe,” according to Grimes.
Lastly, the couple secretly welcomed a son in 2022 named Techno Mechanicus, who also goes by Tau.
Speaking on her third son, Grimes said: “Tau is so amazing. He came out with eyes that could just see so deeply into your soul, with so much knowledge.
“He looks like a little Spock. He’s definitely a Vulcan.”
She later revealed her intention of keeping her three children private.
“I wish I could show u how cute little Techno is 👽 but my priority rn is keeping my babies out of the public eye, Plz respect that at this time 🙏🏻,” Grimes wrote via social media.

How did Elon Musk and Grimes meet?
Canadian musician and Musk met on X, formerly Twitter in April 2018.
Page Six reported at the time that Elon reached out to Grime on the platform after seeing her nerdy joke about artificial intelligence.
The tech giant was planning to make the same joke about Rococo Basilisk but found that Grimes had already beat him to it.
“Grimes said this was the first time in three years that anyone understood the joke. They were both poking fun at AI,” a source told Page Six.
They then began “quietly dating” before making the first official public appearance as a couple at the Met Gala 2018.

Musk was married to author Justine Wilson.
The couple welcomed their first son, Nevada, in 2002 but lost him to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) at 10 weeks old.
The couple went on to have a set of twins — Griffin and Vivian — in 2004 and a set of triplets — Kai, Saxon, and Damian — in 2006, a total of five children.

Six weeks after he filed for divorce from Justine, Elon got engaged to actress Talulah Riley.
The couple went on to marry in 2010 but hit a rough patch in 2014 when they divorced at Elon’s request for the first time.
They later reconciled and remarried 18 months later, only for Riley to file for divorce in 2016.
Elon then moved on to Amber Heard, dating the actress in late 2016, shortly after her divorce from Jonny Depp.
She and Musk split after just one year due to their intense schedules.
It was revealed in July 2022 that Elon had twins with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink.
Shivon reportedly gave birth to their twins using IVF in November 2021.
The two quietly welcomed a third child in 2024, making Elon a dad of at least 12 kids.
Speaking on the news, Elon wrote via X: “Doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis.
“A collapsing birth rate is the biggest danger civilization faces by far.”
