Why am I getting ads on Snapchat? How to remove sponsored snaps

Snapchat app on iPhone

If you’ve noticed ads appearing in your Snapchat Chat feed, you’re not alone – here’s everything you need to know about this feature.

In late 2024, Snapchat introduced a feature called Sponsored Snaps, which places ads directly next to messages from your friends. These are designed to appear as part of the Chat feed but are clearly marked with an ‘Ad’ badge.

Instead of the usual camera or chat button on the right side of the screen, these ads feature an ‘Open link’ button, encouraging users to engage with the advertised content. If you choose not to interact with them, they disappear from your feed after you leave the Chat screen.

According to Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel, this feature allows advertisers to connect with users through visual communication while respecting their privacy. Spiegel emphasized that personal Chats remain private and are not used for advertising purposes.

“Sponsored Snaps empower advertisers to communicate visually with the Snapchat community, making the core functionality of Snapchat accessible to advertisers,” he said.

While the feature began rolling out in late 2024, many users only started encountering Sponsored Snaps in 2025. This has sparked confusion and frustration, with some users mistaking these ads for messages from friends due to their placement in the Chat feed.

If you’d prefer not to see a Sponsored Snap in your Chat feed, here’s how you can remove it:

  1. Press and hold on the Sponsored Snap.
  2. Tap ‘Clear from Chat Feed.’

Alternatively, subscribing to Snapchat Plus can offer an ad-free experience. With the Snapchat+ Platinum Monthly Plan, you’ll avoid Story and Lens ads altogether.
