AVID viewers of the hit show Chicago Fire will be delighted to find out that a fan-favorite character will finally be making a comeback.
In January 2024, the executive producer of the NBC drama confirmed that Matt Casey would be returning to the show.
When will Matt Casey return to Chicago Fire?
Fans can expect to see Matt Casey again in Season 12 of Chicago Fire.
The character exited the show in Season 10 but briefly returned for a couple of episodes in the following seasons.
In Season 11, his return saw him proposing to Kara Killmer’s Sylvie Brett, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.
In an interview with Variety, executive producer Andrea Newman said that fans will see more of Casey in Season 12, and maybe even beyond.

“Jesse Spencer will be back — our beloved Matt Casey,” she said. “We can’t live without him. He’s truly the best.”
Newman also hinted at what viewers can expect from Matt and Sylvie’s storyline, especially since Killmer is reportedly departing from the series.
“We will find out pretty quickly what Brett’s plans are, but her plans — made with the best of intentions — don’t go as she wants them to,” she explained.
“So we’ll find out a lot quickly and then things will change; there will be a rollercoaster.”
Who plays Matt Casey on Chicago Fire?
Matt Casey is played by actor Jesse Spencer.
Spencer left the series in Season 10 after appearing in 200 episodes.
He said that his decision to leave was motivated by his desire to spend more time with his family.
“I realized I’ve been doing TV for a long time. I added it up, and I think this year [2022] is my 18th year of network television… I called [showrunner] Derek [Haas] and broke him the news, said I thought it was time to leave the show, and he agreed that we should at least get Casey to 200 episodes,” he told Us Weekly.
“It was a difficult decision because I’ve loved the show from the start, but there are other things that I would like to do in the future, and there’s some family that I need to take care of, and 18 years is a long time.”
However, he never closed his doors to returning, hence why he opted to make cameos in the subsequent seasons.
“The idea when I left the show was that if it was appropriate and it would work with the storyline they wanted to do, I would be open — and they would be open — to bringing Casey back,” he shared with NBC Insider.
How can I watch Chicago Fire?

Episodes are available for streaming the next day on Peacock.
Season 12 will begin airing on January 17, 2024.
According to Newman, viewers are in for an unpredictable season.
“Yes, there will be some time jump going into the premiere , and viewers and 51 are in it together,” she told TV Line.
“There have been big changes, and the 51 gang is on a rollercoaster ride throughout the episode trying to navigate all of it.”
