Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow shared a fantastic bond both on and off the screen. They will always remain Iron Man and Pepper Potts for the fans. The fans loved watching RDJ suit up on screen, but they had no idea how he had a nervous breakdown behind the scenes as he cried every time he wore his superhero costume. But Paltrow had an interesting reaction to RDJ’s misery. Keep scrolling for more.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka MCU, started with Gwyneth and RDJ starring Iron Man in 2008. In The Avengers, RDJ persuaded the makers to add Paltro’s character Pepper in the movie to show a different side of Tony Stark, as Potts played a significant role in his character development in the film. Tony would do anything to keep his loved ones secure.
In Iron Man 3, the fans saw Gwyneth Paltrow donning the superhero suit, but she dreaded it thanks to her co-star Robert Downey Jr. The third installment in RDJ’s solo franchise was released in 2013, and she once, in an interview with Radio Times, revealed how RDJ would be perspiring after putting his superhero costume on. She said, “I thought it was going to be terrible because in the first two movies, Robert would put on the suit and start sweating.”
She further explained Downey’s condition and added, “He’d have a nervous breakdown and would meditate and cry. He was in hell. So, I was like, ‘Wow, I’d better start mentally preparing myself for the suit.’” But Gwyneth Paltrow’s perception changed when she wore the Iron Man suit, and she thought RDJ was a crybaby.
Gwyneth Paltrow said, “I put it on and was, like, ‘This guy is a wimp.’ It’s really not that bad.” She was also excited to show some moves in Iron Man 3. “I do get to kick ass. I get to do a bit of action. It’s very cool.”
The fans saw Gwyneth Paltrow’s character Pepper Potts wear the suit again in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. She joined the other superheroes in the climactic fight against Thanos. Unfortunately, Robert Downey Jr’s character Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, dies sacrificing himself for others. Paltrow did not return to the MCU after that. Fans often ask about her return, but she feels irritated by that question.
During an Instagram Q&A session, Paltrow said, “I didn’t, I just, it just — we just stopped doing it because Iron Man died, and why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man? I don’t know! Call Marvel and yell at them, not me. I’m just sitting here.”
The Iron Man and Avengers films starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr are available on Disney+.
