EXCLUSIVE: The stars and filmmaker of Borderlands aren’t scheduled to attend next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, but at least you can live the movie if you’re at the fanboy confab, or on your way.
The movie, which stars Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu and Gina Gershon, hits theaters on August 9 via Lionsgate.
For those in the Gas Lamp district, however, there will be Moxxi’s Bar, the infamous watering hole in the video game on which the Eli Roth-directed movie is based. Lionsgate, IGN, and Ballantine’s Scotch whisky are teaming to transform 207 Bar at the Hard Rock Hotel into Moxxi’s from July 25-27. Inside, the DJ Claptrap will perform live sets with Borderlands cocktails curated by Ballantine and inspired by the pic. Slots will be available to play with a chance at Borderlands film merch.
Walk-ins are welcome, but fans can RSVP entry with timed tickets at https://feverup.com/m/187744.
Ballantine’s Scotch whisky has a long-term partnership with Borderlands. In 2022, Ballantine’s teamed up with Borderlands, by appointing bar mogul Mad Moxxi to the role of Chief Galactic Expansion Officer (CGEO) to help launch the world’s second-largest Scotch into the stratosphere. To kick off her contract, Moxxi created her own Borderlands x Ballantine’s bottle of Scotch whisky: the Ballantine’s x Moxxi’s Bar Edition. The limited-edition launched on Pandora and later across selected retailers. During Comic-Con, Ballantine’s will be supplying Moxxi’s bar with a limited run of the Ballantine’s x Moxxi’s Bar Edition.
For those who are descending upon San Diego and happen to be traveling through Albuquerque, there’s the Mountain Dew Borderlands Motel at the Monterey Motel. The experience, which takes place July 22 at 5:30 p.m. MT and is co-sponsored by Mountain Dew and Regal Cinemas, will immerse fans into the dystopian planet of Pandora. It’s open to fans 18+ and 21+ (to drink).
The motel is one of several stops on Regal Cinemas’ Ultimate Borderlands Road Trip tour across the country en route to San Diego, with refueling stops also located in Knoxville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Las Vegas and Hollywood, with all roads leading to Comic-Con.
