Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures have unveiled the first teaser for Oppenheimer, the highly anticipated J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic.
Starring Cillian Murphy as the theoretical physicist who was one of the the main figures behind the development of the atomic bomb, the clip premiered ahead of theatrical screenings of Nope. The foreboding teaser for Nolan’s Tenet follow-up doesn’t give much away, but it offers a brief glimpse at Murphy in the titular role alongside voiceover from those commenting on what the Manhattan Project would mean for the world at large.
The cast for Nolan’s latest, for which he also wrote the screenplay based on the biography American Prometheus, is absolutely stacked. Murphy is joined by Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Peck, and Alex Wolff. A number of other frequent Nolan collaborators, including Gary Oldman and Kenneth Branagh, are also expected to show up.
Oppenheimer is the Dark Knight trilogy helmer’s first film to be distributed by Universal following the collapse of his partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures, which fell out with the director over plans to give simultaneous releases in theaters on HBO Max. Filming for the project first started in January 2022 in New Mexico, and production wrapped by May this year. Black Panther/The Mandalorian composer Ludwig Göransson, who worked with Nolan on Tenet, is handling the score.
Oppenheimer is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023. Check out the teaser up top.
