How to Train You Dragon might feature vikings and fire-breathing beasts battling one another, but that’s not what it’s about. It’s about an unlikely friendship that changed the world. And the lovable duo that is the heart and soul of the franchise take center stage in the new IMAX trailer for the film’s upcoming live-action adaptation. The latest look at How To Train Your Dragon features Hiccup and Toothless showing off why they’re one of our favorite pairs ever.
Director Dean DeBlois is “reimagining” his own animated classic with a film that will see humans and dragons come to life. Only, Toothless won’t change much. His “live-action” counterpart in the new How to Train Your Dragon movie looks just like his animated version. That means this “new” Toothless is just as adorable as ever, which the movie’s new IMAX trailer makes clear. In fact, the first minute of the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie is literally just Toothless hanging around being the cutest.
Fans of the original film will recognize just about every shot in this trailer. Newcomers unsure of what is happening might need the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie’s official synopsis. From Universal Pictures:
On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.

Butler is reprising his role as Stoick, as he voiced the Viking leader in the original How to Train Your Dragon animated version, but this time, he’ll be live and in person. The live-action remake will also feature Nico Parker as Astrid and Nick Frost as Gobber. It also stars Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur. Toothless will star as himself.
And, of course, it will have the same old Hiccup we know and love. He and his best buddy will fly into theaters together when live-action How to Train Your Dragon releases on June 13, 2025.
