There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting a paycheck, depositing it into your bank account, and then seeing your balance rise to reflect the new cash.
Usually, this is a pretty frictionless process: You get a check or a stack of bills, and then you go to an ATM or the bank itself and simply hand the money over to be deposited. Sure, some odd incidents can occasionally happen here and there. But for the most part, the process of earning the money is significantly harder than depositing it.
However, there are some times when actually putting money into your account is more difficult than you think. Now, a user on TikTok has the internet talking after sharing one of those very incidents on the platform.
What Went Wrong With This Woman’s Bank Deposit?
In her video, TikTok user Liz (@lizwizdom) recounts how she “just went to deposit money at the bank, and they tried to give me the wrong amount of money.”
“Before I went to the bank, I checked the amount, counted it myself. It was $1,000 in cash that I was depositing,” Liz explains.
But when she handed the money to the teller, she says something strange happened.
“She rings it up. She says, ‘$900,’” Liz claims.
“I said, ‘Oh, I could have sworn it was $1,000,’” Liz states. “She says, ‘No, it’s 900.’”
Confused, Liz says she asked the teller to check the amount again. After a second check, the teller affirmed that the total was, indeed, $1,000.
“That’s why you have to advocate for yourself, ‘cause no one else is gonna do it for you,” Liz advises.
While she notes that this was probably just a “human mistake” and that the teller was still in training, she notes that had she not advocated for herself, she would have been out $100.
“That was $100 I almost didn’t get if I hadn’t taken the initiative and pushed back a little bit,” she concludes.
Where Does Missing Money At The Bank Go?
Many of the comments focused on Liz’s use of an offensive term to describe being ripped off (she apologized in the comments section and said she wasn’t aware of the word’s origin). However, other commenters were quick to cry conspiracy on the part of the teller.
“She was going to pocket that $100,” wrote one user.
Other users contested this, saying that if the count had truly been off, there would have been an issue. So, what happens when a bank deposits the wrong amount of money?
If you realize that the bank has deposited an incorrect amount of money, CreditNinja and numerous other platforms say that the best course of action is simply informing your bank of the error.
One should provide detailed information to help with the bank’s investigation:
- The teller’s name or description
- The date and time of the transaction
- The missing amount
As bank tellers balance their cash drawers daily, any overage will likely be quickly discovered and lead to a refund. If an overage isn’t discovered, the bank will thoroughly investigate the incident. And, in the case that you were genuinely underpaid, it will issue you a refund.
Commenters Say It’s Happened To Them
In the comments section, many users suspected that the same thing had happened to them. Other users offered methods for ensuring this doesn’t happen in the first place.
“Always count and always ask them to count it using the machine!!!” exclaimed a user.
“Omgoodness I think this happened to me the other day at the bank also!!!” added another.
“Working in banking whenever I’m handed a deposit I always ask how much should be counted so it can be verified the same amount matches,” detailed a third. “All too often bills stick together. When numbers don’t match I count it back and even run it through a machine that customers can see. I cover all the bases on the ways it can be counted.”
