DC Studios is about to reveal their first live-action effort when James Gunn’s Superman hits theaters this summer. In advance of this make-it-or-break-it film, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav recently stated that when it comes to the company’s DC Comics characters, the four cornerstones of their superhero universe are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. The entire DC brand will rest on their mighty shoulders. Via Comic Book Movie, we learned Zaslav said the following during a Warner Bros. investor’s call:
James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan around DC, that is to build asset value for us globally everywhere in the world, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl. So those are — we look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators.
At the upfront presentation in New York, Zaslav also doubled down on the idea that these are the four pillars of DC. But does that ring true at all? Or is he just saying this because a Supergirl movie comes out next year? They need to prop the Girl of Steel up a little higher, perhaps. No doubt, Supergirl is one of DC Comics’ most iconic heroes. But DC’s fourth and fifth longest-running heroes are the Flash and Green Lantern. One of them should be the “4th pillar.” But since both the Green Lantern and Flash films were notorious flops, Warner Bros. doesn’t want to bring them up right now.
Including Supergirl as DC’s 4th pillar isn’t a terrible idea, it at least makes for a nice gender balance. If we’re counting sidekicks and spin-off heroes, realistically it should be Robin/Nightwing. But Dick Grayson doesn’t have a movie on the horizon, and Kara Zor-El does. Perhaps most interesting is that Zaslav mentions Wonder Woman here. Of course, she’s the third part of the DC Trinity, so it makes sense. But there is no Wonder Woman solo project announced, and the Amazon-related series Paradise Lost doesn’t seem to be moving forward at a brisk pace. Could Zaslav mentioning Wonder Woman mean we’re getting some sort of announcement soon? It could be. If Superman and Supergirl become hits, we imagine Diana will be dusting off her magic lasso soon enough.
