Want to learn a “magic” trick in 30 seconds? A bartender has one that is sure to impress at your next gettogether.

Bartender Ryan Stannard (@ryan_stannard4) often uses his platform to share tricks of the trade. In a recent post, he demonstrates one that is familiar with many restaurant industry insiders but little-known outside the wait station.

Stannard shows how you can get a Red Bull can to firmly stick to your palm with a simple trick.

A text overlay on his TikTok reads, “easiest magic trick to learn.”

“I’ve been bartending for way too long now. I know way too much,” Stannard begins the post.

The trick is simple. The bartender says you put the edge of the can on the outside of your palm with your hand cupped. Then simultaneously twist the can towards the center of your palm with what looks to be medium pressure while simultaneously opening your palm and spreading your fingers.

“Open and twist at the same time,” Stannard emphasizes as he repeats the motion.

Viola, as he demonstrates, the can sticks. He even flips his hand upside down and waves it around without the Red Bull can so much as budging. To release the can, the bartender shows that all you have to do is cup your palm. (Best not to do this while you’re holding the Red Bull, or other canned beverage of your choosing, upside down.)

Give ‘Em The Razzle Dazzle

Bartending is about so much more than simply slinging drinks and serving customers quickly and correctly. As demonstrated in the 1988 flick Cocktail starring Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown and the 2000’s cult classic Coyote Ugly, mastering tricks like the one Stannard demonstrates can earn you both loyal regulars and extra income.

This is often called “flair bartending.” It’s so popular that there are tons of competitions in which bartenders demonstrate these skills and compete for cash, prizes, and bragging rights.

Like bartender and creator Vlad SlickBartender points out in a demonstration of five common tricks, they don’t have to be particularly difficult or dangerous to impress. Though the higher the difficulty level, the more impressive, naturally.

Simply tossing a beverage napkin with finesse so that it spins and lands right in front of a customer is one of the easier tricks, Vlad says. He calls Stannard’s trick “the Red Bull suction.”

Balancing bottles and tossing shakers with liquid inside—without spilling anything—require a higher skill level.

‘Practice Starts Tomorrow’

People who apparently work in food service flooded the comments on Stannard’s post.

Many said they were familiar with the trick. One said it was the first they learned, another that it’s the first they teach new bartenders.

Others are determined to learn.

“Thanks now I’m gonna try this,” said one, while another vowed, “Practice starts tomorrow.”

A few went ahead and tried it and were impressed that it actually works. (It does.)

A TikToker called frankenberrrr claims he has a twist on the trick.

“I stick them to my head,” he said.

Stannard’s curiosity was piqued.

“If this is a real thing I need to know,” he replied.

Stannard’s trick may not create world peace, but it is guaranteed to impress some barflies and make bartenders a little extra money. Which is the entire point of flair bartending.

His post has 220,000 views as of this writing. Stannard didn’t respond to BroBible’s direct message sent via TikTok Thursday morning.

No Red Bulls were harmed in the creation of this article.
