Black Panther (2018) was the first superhero movie and the first from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to get nominated for the Oscars or Academy Awards that year. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Sterling K Brown and others. The sequel to the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released in 2022.
Angela Bassett, who plays Ramonda, the Queen Mother of Wakanda, was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in Wakanda Forever. After T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) demise in the movie, Ramonda takes over Wakanda and plays an influential role in bringing peace, harmony and safety assurance to her people. Everyone expected Angela to win the Oscar award as she was impeccable in the movie.
Sadly, Angela didn’t win the award. Instead, Jamie Lee Curtis won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. A year later, the Black Panther actress has opened up about losing the award and how she was gobsmacked and disappointed. On Oprah Winfrey’s show, the host says, “I just knew your name was going to be called. I was beside myself. We were beside ourselves.”

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress responds, “I was gobsmacked! I was. I thought I handled it very well. That was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So I thought, yes, I was disappointed, and I handled it like a human being.” The actress added that handling the Oscar loss gracefully was essential to herself and her children, who had accompanied her to the ceremony.
She adds that there will be such moments of disappointment in life one will experience. But what matters is how one handles themselves. Angela says, “We’re going to smile, we’re going to be gracious, we’re going to be kind, we’re going to party anyway.”
Before Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Angela Bassett was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category in 1993 for her performance in What’s Love Got To Do With It. However, she lost the award to Holly Hunter, who won it for her performance in The Piano.
Meanwhile, Angela Bassett’s latest release is the Netflix film Damsel. The fantasy drama also stars Millie Bobby Brown, Ray Winstone, Brooke Carter, Nick Robinson, and Robin Wright. The film mostly received negative reviews.
