Volbeat guide us through their latest release, ‘God Of Angels Trust’, which is set for release on June 06.
Devils Are Awake
“The laws, rules, systems, guidelines and religions that are put in front of us are always being broken by the ones who create and enforce them. What are we to do other than be skeptical and overprotective and go against the most obvious motherfuckers? It has almost come to a point where you’re asking if the rules are only for fools. We are trying to make our kids believe that everything is okay and that they are safe, but outside the door in the real world the Devil is looking in. Sometimes we cannot see the Devil in front of us because it’s camouflaged as a human. All evil is created by mankind and it finds a way to wear a mask, just like the goat on the album cover represents the Devil, which itself was created by mankind to cover up their egocentric, evil agenda. The goat should sue mankind for being made a symbol of evil and putting up with this shit for so many years!”
By A Monster’s Hand
“It’s a fictitious story about a serial killer. He cuts up his victims and he’s got their body parts in his home. During the night, this guy uses the skin and body parts of his victims to make clothing, and then he dances around with the body parts. Then, a huge storm rips apart the house and scatters the parts around the neighborhood. The serial killer is forced to go around the neighborhood gathering all the body parts in a big box, which he uses to transport them to a new home. It’s the first part of a two-part story that concludes in “Enlightening The Disorder (By A Monsters Hand Part 2).
It’s inspired by some of the real serial killers throughout history. I don’t want to use their names since I don’t want to give them any credit, but it’s a fact that they were here and some are still around. The good thing is that those older well-known killers were captured and if they weren’t laid to rest, they were locked up and the keys were thrown away. The scary part is that in these modern days we can see them on the news every day and the ones who are supposed to be locking them up are either in on it or are just trying to keep themselves alive. In that sense, the song is also about finding the key to lock up these motherfuckers with and throwing it away.”
Acid Rain
“This song is about having an out-of-body experience and meeting people from the past. It’s a very emotional song for me because in this out-of-body experience I meet my dad and ask him if he saw the light when he passed away on a couch at home. You hear stories about people who were dead for a few minutes and then come back and they have a rush of memories that they had in life, and they see all of this at high speed. In the lyrics, I’m asking my dad a lot of questions, and I’m trying to invite him to show up to visit my family and see the grandkids that he never met. So, these are very emotional and personal lyrics.”
Demonic Depression
“’Demonic Depression’ is based on one of my really good friends and the state of mind that he was in for a couple of years. I’ve played it for several friends, and they’ve all asked, ‘Did you write that about me?’ Which is a little scary and just shows how many people are dealing with mental issues in certain parts of their lives and how many are constantly struggling. It’s about some heavy mental issues, so I guess the message is pretty universal. Depression is so all-consuming, and it affects so many people, and the best way to help someone struggling with it is to talk to them and listen what they have to say. I’ve had my share of mental issues throughout life, so I guess I’m part of the lyrics, too.”
In The Barn Of The Goat Giving Birth To Satan’s Spawn In A Dying World Of Doom
“I had so much fun writing these lyrics. It’s about the outcasts and fallen angels of God – all the angels that were cast out of Heaven. And I’m being told to collect them in this big wagon and bring them to a barn. There’s a ritual going on where the fallen angels are being sacrificed to Satan’s spawn to create soldiers for a new dark kingdom. So, instead of inviting my lady out to go to the cinema, I say, ‘I have something better. You have to see what’s going on in this barn… we’ve been invited to see the birth of Satan’s spawn and watch the world go down. How about that?’ I think some people will read the lyrics and go, ‘what’s wrong with this dude?’ But, it’s all for fun. It’s like a silly horror movie. Or is it?”
Time Will Heal
“This is another very deep song. Through life, we go through these ups and downs and sometimes it’s like turning on a switch and it can change from one minute to another. We suddenly get in a sad, emotional mood where there just doesn’t seem to be a way to see the light or good in anything. But we always find a way to make things good again. I’m good at turning those moments around quickly, but that comes with accepting the good with the bad and using the bad moments to grow and learn instead of letting them bother you more that it should and having your mind manipulate reality. The important thing is to realize that while nothing can be good forever, do not let the dark side of life take over. Have the confidence to know there will be better days ahead when we’re dealing with these moments or demons and we’re struggling to find anything good in what we’re doing.
I’m still struggling with the loss of my father. I would say 80 percent of the time I’m coping with the loss and doing well. I’m okay with it. But then sometimes I’m falling into these black holes where everything is empty and nothing is fair. I’m so grateful I have kids because when they come into your life, suddenly everything is not about you. It’s about the kids and you can’t spend too much of your energy being down because they need you. So, it’s been a blessing having kids. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me and when I think about them, I feel happy. I’m happy every day when I wake up and I feel happy when I go to bed. And I’m proud that I have a great wife. I have a great life. And suddenly I can see that I’ve been walking around being so egocentric about my own state of mind and life when, really, I have nothing to complain about.”
Better Be Fueled Than Tamed
“It goes without saying that you’ve got to live while you’re here. My father always said, ‘Michael, while you are awake, be useful,’ and he was right. Let’s be productive so we can be proud of ourselves and help each other. We need to do stuff while we’re capable of doing it instead of just sinking on the couch and not caring about anything. At the same time, the lyrics open up and address how I feel when I am struggling with a situation and I have to work my way around it. Life is precious, and you have to grab it by the balls and be fueled by the fire rather than let the fire burn out. Let’s bring on the fire while we are still alive.”
At The End Of The Sirens
“This song is similar lyrically to one we did on Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies called ‘The Hangman’s Body Count.’ You have the Grim Reaper knocking on your door. He lives underground and suddenly he must decide who he has to take that day. So, when people hear the sirens, everyone gets paranoid because they think, ‘Okay, one of us has to go…’ It’s a funny lyric, but it’s also kind of serious because it’s a reminder, again, to get stuff done while we’re awake. Otherwise, the reaper might turn on his sirens and knock on your door and say, ‘it is time.’ It might not always be the post man who knocks on the door…”
Lonely Fields
“These are some of my most personal lyrics. When I was a young kid, on Saturdays during the Summer, my Dad and I would go on his moped to the cornfields to pick corn for his birds. He had a lot of birds at home. I just remember the rides on the bike. I could smell the apple trees and the pear trees as we passed them, and we could smell the cornfields and hear all the crows. In the song, I bring myself back to that time, and I can kind of smell the scent of him. Then, I wake up during the night because there are birds and crows calling from outside the window. They’re all circling around the house I live in, and from my bedroom I can look out to a huge cornfield. These birds keep waking me up and as I look out the window, I see the light of the cornfield and the spirit of my father trying to get me to come outside to pick corn with him for the birds. Finally, I leave the house and go outside and walk the lonely fields with him where we pick all the corn. I tell him not to go away, and I see a clear silhouette of him. I decide to walk with him and we disappear. But the last thing I’m singing in the song is, ‘I walk with him and I’m coming home with him.’ So that’s a very, very emotional song for me and I’m proud of it.”
Enlightening The Disorder (By A Monster’s Hand Part 2)
“It’s a continuation of “By A Monster’s Hand,” and finds the serial killer in his new home. In the grand finale, he opens his box and makes a puppet show out of real human bones and skin. He becomes so obsessed with his own theater that he wants to put himself in the box that he has all these body parts in. He crumples himself into it and starts to cut off his own limbs and body parts, then the play is over and the key to the box is lost on the floor with him inside of it.”
