The first trailer for Nic Cage‘s new movie The Surfer just dropped and it is delightfully unhinged in a way that we can only expect to see from Nicolas. He plays a surfer who returns to his seemingly serene beachside childhood home to go surfing with his own son but things aren’t how they were when he grew up.

This is a psychological thriller, after all. There’s a group of locals who live by the mantra “don’t live here, don’t surf here” and they are extremely hostile toward Nic Cage showing up with his son.

All that Cage wants to do is surf but they aren’t having it and things slowly unravel until he’s gripped by complete madness and pushed to the limits. Here’s the first trailer for Nicolas Cage’s The Surfer:

This film received a 6-minute-long standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival last Summer. The Surfer is set to be released in theaters this Spring, with a theatrical release date set for May 2, 2025, but it’s unclear how many theaters it will be released in.

The film was directed by Dublin-born director Lorcan Finnegan who has directed films like Nocebo and Vivarium but has yet to break through to the mainstream. It was written by Thomas Martin who also wrote the TV series Tin Star and Ripper Street, again, a pretty unknown commodity in the Hollywood mainstream.

Much of the filming for Nic Cage’s The Surfer took place at Margaret River in Western Australia. It’s a global surfing destination with a WSL tour stop there every year that attracts the top surfers on the planet. So at the very least, it will have a gorgeous setting

Early reviews on IMDB from people who saw The Surfer at the London Film Festival are very encouraging. One reviewer wrote “I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed seeing someone suffer – on screen – this much” which is an odd premise for a film but for a Nic Cage psychological thriller that sounds like a winning recipe.
