The card collecting industry has exploded in recent years to such an extent that industry leader Topps is now producing a Robert Oppenheimer card that’s set social media ablaze. Yes, that’s J. Robert Oppenheimer we’re talking about, the father of the atomic bomb recently given renewed revelancy due to the Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer.

On Wednesday, January 22, Topps announced that they were releasing Robert Oppenheimer’s “first ever autograph card,” as the infamous theoretical physicist as a “very difficult signature to find.”

The announcement of Oppenheimer’s “rookie card” set off a fire storm of jokes on social media, as people largely couldn’t believe that such a thing could exist.

“Pulling an Oppie card grants Death Note powers, little known fact,” one Twitter user joked.

“Do you think he got the Manhattan Project stats on the back,” cracked another.

As mentioned above, Robert Oppenheimer is more present in the public consciousness now than he was the previous 30 years due to Nolan’s 2023 film Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer, based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. Similarly, Cillian Murphy, who portrayed Oppenheimer in the film to chilling effect, also won the Oscar for Best Actor.

The film was a biopic about Oppenheimer’s life, tracking his time at university to being a professor at Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology, to his development of the atom bomb as the head of the Manhattan Project, and is widely considered to be one of the best films of both Nolan’s illustrious career and of the 2020s.
