Earlier this year, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences made headlines when it announced it would be adding a Best Stunt Work category to the ceremony, leading many to want Tom Cruise to make another Mission: Impossible movie in order to finally win his Oscar. As it turns out, he’s not going to need to.

This week, the Academy announced that Tom Cruise — alongside Dolly Parton, production designer Wynn Thomas, and actor-choreographer Debbie Allen — will be receiving Honorary Oscars at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Cruise has been previously nominated for Academy Awards three times: Best Actor in 1990 (Born on the Fourth of July) and 1997 (Jerry Maguire), and Best Supporting Actor in 2000 (Magnolia).

He and the other three Governors Award recipients will recieve the honors at the 16th annual Governors Awards at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood on November 16.

“This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” Janet Yang, Academy President, said in a statement.

“The Academy’s Board of Governors is honored to recognize these brilliant artists. Debbie Allen is a trailblazing choreographer and actor, whose work has captivated generations and crossed genres. Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all. Beloved performer Dolly Parton exemplifies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her unwavering dedication to charitable efforts. And production designer Wynn Thomas has brought some of the most enduring films to life through a visionary eye and mastery of his craft.”

Earlier this summer, Cruise starred in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Reports indicate that the next film he will be starring in is Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s still-untitled October 2026 film alongside Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman.
