TIFF Official Selection Adds 'Saturday Night', Jacob Elordi 'On Swift Horses,' More

And the films just keeping on coming as the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has announced 20 movies to its official selection takes its count to 278 titles.

Chief among them is Jason Reitman’s SNL origin pic Saturday Night from Sony which will get its Canadian premiere in the filmmaker’s homeland. With that deduction, this must mean Saturday Night is going to Telluride.

Also you though Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years, well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On Swift Horses. The Daniel Minahan directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. She embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Also, getting their North American premieres are Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian American movie Megalopolis after its Cannes premiere earlier this year; Lionsgate has the distribution deal on that film. Luca Guadagnino’s Queer is also coming to North America here after its Venice premiere.

Max Minghella has his sci-fi horror movie Shell starring his Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss, Kaia Gerber and Mary Lynn Rajskub. Pic’s blurb: “Set in the near future, when society has reached unprecedented heights in its cultural fixation with youth and beauty.”. The movie is getting its world premiere at TIFF.

Hamm’s movies Driven and The Journey both screened at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals to critical acclaim in 2018 and 2016 respectively. In the pic, the nations of medieval Europe struggle for power, the ruthless Austrian Empire invades neighboring Switzerland, and a peaceful huntsman, William Tell, is thrust into the heart of their resistance. Claes Bang is William Tell. The pic also stars Ben Kingsley, Jonathan Pryce and Emily Beecham.

There’s also the world premiere of Marianne Elliott’s The Salt Path with Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs which centers around a couple who lose their home and later discover the husband has been diagnosed with a terminal illness as they embark on a year long coastal trek.
