Ticketmaster May Have Broken UK Law with Oasis Ticket Pricing

Following a public on-sale for Oasis’ 2025 reunion tour as chaotic as Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour,” the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into Ticketmaster’s handling of the process. Now, the CMA has released its initial findings and suggested that the ticketing platform may have “breached consumer protection law.”

In a press release, the UK competition regulator said Ticketmaster may have misled consumers with its sale of “platinum tickets” at nearly 2.5 times the price of equivalent tickets. According to the investigation, the ticketing giant didn’t sufficiently disclose that the platinum tickets “did not offer additional benefits” compared to standard offerings.

“We’re concerned that Oasis fans didn’t get the information they needed or may have been misled into buying tickets they thought were better than they were,” said the CMA’s interim senior director of consumer protection, Hayley Fletcher.

The CMA added that Ticketmaster failed to notify customers that there were two categories of tickets offered, with the cheaper seats being sold before the more expensive tickets. As a result, many fans waited in an online queue “without understanding what they would be paying and then having to decide whether to pay a higher price than they expected.”

In its findings, the CMA further expressed concern that “consumers were not given clear and timely information about how the pricing of standing tickets would work, particularly where many customers had to wait in lengthy queues to see what tickets were available.”

It’s worth noting, however, that the CMA has concluded Ticketmaster did not use real-time “dynamic pricing” for the Oasis sale, but rather released lower-priced tickets first and then sold the remaining tickets at far higher prices.

The CMA is now consulting with Ticketmaster to “ensure fans receive the right information, at the right time.”

Ticketmaster said in a statement, “We strive to provide the best ticketing platform through a simple, transparent and consumer-friendly experience. We welcome the CMA’s input in helping make the industry even better for fans.”

Platinum tickets are not a new hot-button topic for Ticketmaster. In 2023, The Cure opted out of both platinum tickets and dynamic pricing on their North American tour. Neil Young recently announced he was following in the group’s footsteps by eliminating platinum tickets from upcoming concert tours.

Earlier this month, Oasis revealed Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is producing a documentary film around their “Oasis Live ’25” tour. The reunion trek kicks off in Cardiff, Wales, on July 4th, with additional stops in the UK and Ireland before heading over to North America on August 24th.
