It seems highly unlikely that someone would choose where on planet earth they wanted to live from a list of ‘coolest neighborhoods’ in the world. But it is certainly possible.
The much more likely option is if someone is apartment or house hunting and they have two viable options of places to live and one of them is on the list of the world’s coolest neighborhoods then choosing the cooler ‘hood might make sense.
With that said, it’s a bit concerning that only 2 of the 10 coolest neighborhoods in the world are in the United States. It doesn’t exactly give us a ton to work with in terms of cool options, does it? And for that matter, the neighborhoods named on Time Out‘s latest list seem to be a bit subjective. I lived in NYC for a decade and I’m not sure I’d agree that Ridgewood in Queens is the coolest the city has to offer…
The 10 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World, Right Now
1. Colonia Americana – Guadalajara, Mexico
2. Cais do Sodré – Lisbon, Portugal
3. Wat Bo Village – Siem Reap, Cambodia
4. Ridgewood – New York City, USA
5. Mile End – Montreal, Canada
6. Barrio Logan – San Diego, USA
7. Shimokitazawa – Tokyo, Japan
8. Cliftonville – Margate, UK
9. Barrio Yungay – Santiago, Chile
10. Cours Julien – Marseille, France
The full list from Time Out actually includes the ’51 coolest neighborhoods’ in the world. So if you are absolutely infatuated with your neighborhood and devastated that it didn’t make the top 10 of the list, there’s a chance it made the top 51.
Some other neighborhoods in the United States that made the list of the coolest neighborhoods include Avondale, Chicago (#16), Silver Lake, Los Angeles (#21), Coconut Grove, Miami (#29), and a few others.
Whether or not you actually would want to live in any of these neighborhoods remains completely subjective. Frankly, I see this more as a good guideline for anyone who is traveling and likes to stay in cool neighborhoods instead of a city center.
And the criteria for ‘cool’ is also pretty subjective. Time Out says ‘simply put’ these are ‘incredible places to be right now’ but then lists some criteria used to judge each location.
