The Rolling Stones have added another layer to the Hackney Diamonds experience by sharing the official music video for “Mess It Up.” Taking the actorial lead in the short is Nicholas Hoult, who will appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy film and takes the viewer on Mick Jagger’s lyrically-led journey.
The video presents the narrative that Hoult’s character is in the process of leaving his romantic relationship behind. In doing so, he discovers the simple pleasures in life: Going from the volatility of the past to starting anew and greeting each experience with open arms and an unabashed willingness to explore.
As the video progresses, Hoult walks through the seasons, using the emergence of facial hair as symbolism for the passing of time in addition to the elements. Upon his return to the initial romantic entanglement, Hoult discovers in his absence, life goes on.
The video was shot by Grammy-award-winning director Calmatic and arrived after the band announced their touring plans for the spring. The slate of dates will take the British rockers through the United States for a coast-to-coast excursion, commencing on April 28, 2024, at NRG Stadium in Houston. Learn more here.
