The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have detailed their plans for a co-headlining tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their albums Give Up and Transatlanticism in the fall of 2023. Benjamin Gibbard co-founded both bands and released both albums within eight months of one another – The Postal Service’s Give Up went on to be Platinum-certified by the RIAA, while Death Cab for Cutie’s Transatlanticism served as their breakthrough, fourth studio LP and went on to be Gold-certified.
Gibbard will take the stage with both headliners, and his performances with The Postal Service will mark the group’s first shows since 2013’s 10-year anniversary tour of Give Up. For his sets with The Postal Service, he’ll be joined by bandmates Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis – for Death Cab for Cutie’s segments, he’ll be joined by Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr.
“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out,” Gibbard shared in a press release. “These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”
The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie’s co-headlining tour will kick off at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine, on Sept. 8, 2023. From there, they’ll traverse the East Coast making stops in cities including Boston, Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, Detroit and more. They’ll round out their September dates with a two-night stint at Denver’s Mission Ballroom on Sept. 26 and 27.
They’ll kick off the October segment of their tour at the Arizona Financial Theatre in Pheonix, Ariz., on Oct. 3. Then, they’ll perform their final shows throughout the West Coast, stopping in Las Vegas and Seattle before closing out their tour with a penultimate performance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif. on Oct. 10 and a final show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Oct. 13.
It’s notable that ahead of Gibbard’s tour with Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service, he will continue his Asphalt Meadow’s world tour, with the latter in January 2023, hitting North America, Europe and the United Kingdom through June.
Presale for the joint tour will start Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m. local and continue through the following day, Dec. 15, at 10 p.m. local. General on-sale will begin Friday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. local. Learn more and find tickets here.
