Love zombies and enjoy feeling deep emotional pain? Eager for both, even? HBO has you covered in every way. The network has announced season two of it’s smash hit adaptation The Last of Us will premiere in April. And the announcement trailer for The Last of Us season two’s release date promises a violent, gut-wrenching return.

During Sony’s press conference at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, The Last of Us co-creator, writer, and executive producer Neil Druckmann made the announcement viewers have been waiting for. The Last of Us will return to HBO for its second season this spring in April. (It will also stream on Max.) We don’t yet know the exact date in April that The Last of Us season two will release, but hey, there are only 30 days to choose from. We feel sure HBO will confirm the exact release date soon.

The seven-episode second season, based in part on the wildly popular second installment of the video game franchise, will feature a time skip. Here’s The Last of Us official logline for season two:

Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.

In addition to stars Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), Gabriel Luna (Tommy) will also return for The Last of Us season two—as will Rutina Wesley (Maria). The big addition to the cast, the young woman who is all over this announcement trailer, is Kaitlyn Dever. She plays Abby. If you don’t know anything about the character, don’t look her up.  In fact, avoid any and all spoilers about The Last of Us Part II video game. (This trailer does offer some clues about Abby’s story, FYI…)

Season two of The Last of Us will also feature Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara is also joining the cast, in what already looks like a series that has “show of the year potential” based just on this trailer alone.

Will it end up earning that moniker? If it delivers all the zombies and emotional pain we crave, then yes.
