The Last of Us is set to premiere on Sunday, January 15, and given the source material it’s based on, the stars attached, and the creative team/budget involved, HBO is obviously hoping that the post-apocalyptic series is their next big hit.
Given that The Last of Us has more in common with House of the Dragon than it does Succession, the series is obviously being compared to Game of Thrones in the run-up to its premiere: the first season of the series, for example, reportedly has a higher budget than most of the Thrones seasons did.
Neil Druckmann, the creator of the story that the series is based upon, is certainly confident in the show’s chances of success. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, for example, Druckmann specifically name-checked Game of Thrones when discussing the plans for the series’ future.
Druckmann cannot reveal whether a rumored Part III game from Naughty Dog is coming, but says: “I think there’s more story to tell.” Either way, Druckmann isn’t worried about falling into the same trap faced by Game of Thrones, when the HBO drama famously surpassed author George R.R. Martin’s source material. “We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” he says. “We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.” [via The Hollywood Reporter]
