Earlier this week — after being rumored to be in the works for a few years now — it was confirmed that a sequel to I Am Legend, starring a returning Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, is in the works.
In addition to the confirmation of the film, producer and writer Akiva Goldsman also shared some of the sequel’s plot details, including how they will be bringing back Will Smith’s character Dr. Robert Neville, who sacrificed himself at the end of the first film.
As for the revival of Robert Neville, the film will accomplish that by utilizing the film’s infamous alternate ending in which he survives as canon.
Goldsman also cited the massive HBO hit The Last of Us as an inspiration for the film, specifically name-checking the production design of having nature take back the Earth.
“This will start a few decades later than the first. I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20 to 30-year lapse,” Goldsman said.
“You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens?” [via Deadline]
While the film’s two lead stars and director — Francis Lawrence, who helmed the 2007 original — have been confirmed, not much else is known about the project at this time.
I Am Legend is just one of many projects that Michael B. Jordan is attached to in the coming years. Most recently, he can be seen starring in Creed III, which he also directed. That movie will hit theaters on March 3.
He’s also attached to films such as Danny Boyle’s Methuselah, Ryan Coogler’s Wrong Answer, a Rainbow Six movie (in which he’ll reprise his Without Remorse role of John Clark), and an untitled Thomas Crown Affair project.
