The Boy and the Heron, Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning animated masterpiece, is being released in a limited-edition Steelbook 4K Ultra HD set on Tuesday, June 9th (pre-order here).
The two-disc set includes a variety of bonus features, including interviews with composer Joe Hisaishi, producer Toship Suzuki, and animation supervisor Takeshi Honda; feature-length storyboards; a “Spinning Globe” music video; an exclusive poster; and more.
In addition to the limited-edition Steelbook, The Boy and the Heron will be available in standalone Blu-ray + DVD and 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray packages. It marks the first-ever title from Studio Ghibli to be released on 4K UHD.
The English dub of The Boy and the Heron boasts an impressive A-list voice cast, including Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Mark Hamill, and Gemma Chan.
In his review of the film, Clint Worthington called The Boy and the Heron “a magnificent final flourish that folds together many of the thematic and aesthetic threads [Miyazaki’s] explored through his career: man’s relationship to nature, the majesty of flight, the twin pulls of love and loss. It’s stunning and inscrutable and measures among the best of his works.”
