Matty Healy and Gabriella Bechtel are officially engaged.
Bechtel, a model and musician known as Gabbriette, announced the news Tuesday on Instagram with photos of a diamond-encrusted engagement ring. She tagged Healy, front man of the rock group The 1975, with whom she had just attended Charli XCX’s “Brat” concert in Brooklyn, New York.
“MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” Bechtel joked in a caption.
She’s not wrong: Charli XCX herself got engaged to 1975 drummer George Daniel last year. Some fans are surprised that Healy is already engaged, just one year after he and megastar singer-songwriter Taylor Swift broke up (though they reportedly only dated for a few weeks). But Healy’s family isn’t surprised in the least.
“I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged,” his mother Denise Welch reportedly confirmed Wednesday on the U.K. chat show “Loose Women.” “He’s got engaged to Gabriella Bechtel — Gabbriette she’s known as. Black diamond; he had it made for her.”
The ring features a large black gem surrounded by pavé diamonds around the wedding band and the stone. Welch said Healy and Bechtel have been in New York “to see their friends Charli and George,” and that they were already engaged when Healy left.
Bechtel, who was reportedly first spotted wearing her ring in late May, was first romantically linked to Healy in September. They were spotted kissing in New York at the time, and were seen at a Fashion Week event a few days later.
Bechtel frequently posts food videos on social media and is reportedly working on a cookbook. She was handpicked by Charli XCX in 2019 to join the band Nasty Cherry, a process documented in the Netflix documentary series “I’m with the Band: Nasty Cherry.”
The timeline for Healy and Bechtel’s wedding isn’t clear, but Healy’s mother said Wednesday that she “couldn’t be more thrilled,” and that Bechtel is “everything I would want in a daughter-in-law.”
Swift fans, meanwhile, are less enthused. Her latest album is, after all, widely thought to have been inspired by her and Healy’s romance.
