Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of Ash, the upcoming sci-fi thriller directed by musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, Thompson will take on the role of a woman who wakes up on a planet to find the rest of her space station crew dead. The man sent to rescue her is played by Gordon-Levitt, and it’s up to both characters whether they can trust one another. FlyLo will direct in his second feature-length offering, while Jonni Remmler penned the script.
Production on Ash is due to kick-off in New Zealand next year. Flying Lotus will also serve as the composer on the project, which is produced by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp.
Before Ash arrives, Flying Lotus has some horror on the way. He served as the director and writer behind one of the segments of VHS 99, the latest installment of the found footage series that’s set to debut on streaming service Shudder on Oct. 20. Other directors include Vanessa and Joseph Winter, Maggie Levin, Tyler MacIntyre, and Johannes Roberts.
FlyLo previously directed the surreal body horror comedy Kuso—a Japanese word that roughly translates to “shit”—in 2017. Co-written by comedian Zack Fox and Salad Fingers creator David Firth, the film also featured appearances from Tim Heidecker, George Clinton, Anders Holm, and Hannibal Buress.
