Canadian actress Tattiawna Jones chatted about starring in “Murderbot” on Apple TV+ and working with Alexander Skarsgård, lead actor and executive producer.

This sci-fi series is based on the bestselling book series by Martha Wells. “Murderbot” follows a rogue security unit as it searches for the meaning of life.

The synopsis is: It’s rogue. It’s powerful. It would rather be watching TV. In a high-tech future, a rogue security robot (Alexander Skarsgård) secretly gains free will.

To stay hidden, it reluctantly joins a new mission protecting scientists on a dangerous planet…even though it just wants to binge soap operas.

Most recently, on Monday, April 28th, Apple TV+ hosted the “Murderbot” red carpet premiere at Regal Union Square in New York City.

Experience in ‘Murderbot’

On being a part of “Murderbot,” she said, “It was incredible. I was talking to Tamara [Podemski] today and we were reminiscing about times on set; we kept calling it the unicorn show.”

Jones continued, “A lot of us have been working in this business for a very long time and we would go in every day, and we asked ourselves ‘it can’t be this good, right?’ It was challenging in ways that me, as an artist, wants to be challenged, where we get to play with such amazing talent like Tamara, Alexander Skarsgård, and David Dastmalchian.”

Working with Alexander Skarsgård

On working with Alexander Skarsgård, she exclaimed, “Working with Alexander was fabulous; he is such a wonderful human being. He is so talented and he is very funny.”

“I think he is the perfect casting for ‘Murderbot.’ What Alex brought to the screen was such a depth and a nuance inside a character that is so rich in the book, and the way he has brought this character to life, he is able to convey so much by doing so little,” Jones elaborated.

Working with David Dastmalchian

On working with David Dastmalchian, she said, “David is such an incredible person; I am very lucky to call him a friend. I feel the same way about the whole cast.”

Jones continued, “We are very similar to this space hippie group of characters that we got to play, so when we all met each other for the first time, we just got on like a summer camp. It was great, and it felt like a very grown-up summer camp that we were all at together.”

“It was just a joy to meet lovely new people at work,” she added.

Playing her character

On playing her character Arada, she said, “Throughout this series, Arada goes through a journey. She makes discoveries about herself that I don’t necessarily think she would have anticipated at the beginning.”

“Her relationship evolves with her partner Pin Lee,” Jones said. “I think Arada learns a lot about herself and at the end, we  get to see her at this really new place, which for me, as an actor, was very exciting. Overall, it was exciting to play her.”

The digital age

On being a part of the digital age, she said, “I think we are all swimming in it.”

“I certainly like being a part of this digital pocket that is called ‘Murderbot’ because it was such a special experience,” she noted.

“I think it does such a beautiful job of blending the digital age (big umbrella term) with humanity (and human characteristics that we as a planet are trying to preserve within ourselves),” she elaborated.

“I think this half hour of thriller/sci-fi/vulnerable oddities is really reflective. As a viewer, I certainly feel very seen, and I am very grateful,” she admitted.

“Once I saw it all come together in the end, I was really grateful in a different way because I felt seen as a viewer,” she added.

Lessons learned from the ‘Murderbot’ screenplay

On the lessons learned from the “Murderbot” screenplay, she said, “There is a level of vulnerability that exists in this series that rides this line of humor and depth, where I can take a larger risk toward in my life. Possibly others might feel this way too.”

Success

Regarding her definition of success, she said, “Success means leaving better than I came. It means being a little better today than I was yesterday.”

Closing thoughts on the ‘Murderbot’ series

For fans and viewers, Jones remarked about “Murderbot,” “I hope people see themselves in it, and that people are a little bit more understanding and forgiving, and go again.” .

“There is a lot of beautiful humanity reflected in this sci-fi thriller and comedic series that is led by a robot,” she acknowledged.

“I hope people are able to see all the human traits that are reflected so beautifully, and identify with them,” she concluded.
