After teasers, sneak peak scenes, and even product placement commercials, fans are finally getting a look at the first full trailer for James Gunn’s Superman. With the cinematic launch of the new DC Universe flying into theaters on July 11th, you can watch the new preview below.
Superman forgoes the typical origin story, instead establishing a world in which superheroes are already an accepted part of society. In fact, it seems Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane is well aware that David Corenswet’s Clark Kent is really Superman in disguise. The trailer opens with her interviewing the Man of Steel about stopping a war — potentially in violation of international law.
While Supes sticks to his belief that he was doing good on behalf of mankind, the US government isn’t so sure. Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo, apparently now the Secretary of Defense) is tasked with bringing in Big Blue, with the help of a mysterious superhuman (Ultraman?) and Angela Spica/The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría).

But The Engineer seems to have another partner: Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. “Superman is not a man, he’s an ‘it’ that has somehow become the focal point of the entire world’s conversation,” says Luthor as they raid the Fortress of Solitude. “I will not accept that.”
Thankfully, Supes isn’t alone either: Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion’s Guy “Green Lantern” Gardner all appear — as does Krpyto the Superdog.
The movie also stars Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Jonathan and Martha Kent, respectively. Other cast members include Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Wendell Pierce (Perry White), Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord), and reportedly Milly Alcock debuting as Supergirl.
While Superman will be the first movie from Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios, the seeds of the interconnected universe have already been planted. Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. plays a lead role in the animated Max series Creature Commandos, and he also appears alongside Merced, Fillion, and Sean Gunn’s characters in the recently released trailer for Peacemaker Season 2. That series is due out August 12th and will likely be set after the events of Superman — though considering how that preview ends, it could take place in an entirely different universe.
