A new clip from James Gunn’s Superman has revealed the clever explanation the film uses to explain how Clark Kent’s simple glasses design tricks people. Kent wears “hypno-glasses,” which changes his appearance in other people’s brains.

The clip — which sees Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane arguing with Nathan Fillon’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern — reveals that Clark wears hypno-glasses, which makes his face look “different” in people’s brains.

This isn’t a James Gunn original, either, as it was an idea that’s been pulled directly from the comic books.

The review embargo for Superman lifted on Tuesday, July 7, with the film debuting to a 85% critics score and 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a massive win for DC Studios as it looks to launch a new cinematic universe franchise.

Having seen Superman myself, it’s clear that James Gunn set out to make a pure Superman movie, and by that metric, he absolutely accomplished his goal — the structure, tone, color, and characters all feel ripped from the beloved 1990s cartoon Superman: The Animated Series.

With those things so prioritized, however, the story lacks the energy and emotion you’ve come to associate with Gunn’s work; it’s nowhere near as moving as the GotG trilogy

Superman is never enough of an outsider to be rag-tag, never enough of an underdog to be a loser, never in enough danger to fear for him — ultimately making it an enjoyable movie but not an affecting one, despite its admirable geopolitical commentary. This’ll jump-start the DCU, no doubt, but it feels more like first down than a touchdown.

Alongside David Corenswet — who is being widely praised in the early batch of reviews — as the Man of Steel, Superman also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luhtor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (a Green Lantern), Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and Frank Grillo as Rick Grillo Sr.

Additional cast members in James Gunn’s latest comic book movie include María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Terence Rosemore, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and more.
