Stevie Nicks Working on First New Album in 14 Years

Stevie Nicks is reportedly working on a new album of material, which will mark her first full-length release of original material in 14 years.

Still unnamed, the new album’s existence was revealed by the Fleetwood Mac singer during a speech given in commemoration of her induction to the Pollstar Hall Of Fame on Wednesday night. “I’m actually making a record right now,” Nicks told the crowd, explaining that she calls it “the ghost record” on account of it coming together impromptu in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires.

“It just really kinda happened in the last couple of weeks because of, you know, the fires,” she said. “I was sitting in a hotel for 92 days, and at some point during that last part of the 92 days, I said, ‘You know what? I feel like I’m on the road, but there’s no shows.’ I’m just sitting here by myself because everybody else is at the house, doing all the remediations and everything, and it’s just me, sitting here. And I thought, ‘You need to go back to work.’ And I did.”

Nicks continued to say that the album would mark a first for her by featuring truly autobiographical material. “I have seven songs, and they are autobiographical, real stories where I’m not pulling any punches for probably the first time in my life,” she said. “They are not airy-fairy songs that you are wondering who they’re about but you don’t really get it. They’re real stories of memories of mine, of fantastic men.”

Elsewhere in her speech, Nicks said the album’s intimate nature was partially inspired by Prince, sharing a story where he rejected a gold necklace gift from her and said, “You always bring me a gift, you never bring me you.” Clearly still struck by that comment, she told the audience, “This is where this record began… I said, ‘I am ready to write!’”

At other points, Nicks shared recollections of recording, expressed her fondness of touring, thanked her fans and supporters, and said that she recently told Missy Elliott that her own hair makes her feel 10 years younger. Watch the speech below.

The new album would be Nicks’ first solo release since 2011’s In Your Dreams. Last year, she released the politically-charged single “The Lighthouse.”

Meanwhile, Nicks will hit the road for two legs of US tour dates later this year — one in August and one in October — which will include three dates with Billy Joel. Get tickets here.
