The series finale of Squid Game ends with a scene that seemingly implies a spinoff could be on the way and we have an update on those plans.

Back in October 2024, before season two or season three ever aired, we learned about plans that were in development at Netflix.

After watching the finale, there seems to be a connection between that final scene and the reported future of the franchise.

Cate Blanchett appears as recruiter for Los Angeles games!

The final scene of Squid Game introduces us to Cate Blanchett as the recruiter for the American version of the game, taking place in Los Angeles.

Cate‘s recruiter is seen playing a game of dajiki with a man in an alleyway, slapping him continuously the way Gi-hun was slapped by the recruiter in season one.

So, how could this be connected to the spinoff plans?

Deadline reported last year that acclaimed director David Fincher was in talks to develop and direct an English-language spinoff series. This would mark the first Squid Game scripted spinoff series, however, Netflix did release the unscripted competition series Squid Game: The Challenge in 2023.

Fincher is best known for movies like Fight Club, The Social Network, and Gone Girl, but Cate previously worked with him on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. They already have a friendship and working relationship!

Variety shared a June 2025 update on the spinoff plans with sources saying that Netflix “has no plans to announce a Squid Game spinoff at this time,” but that the streamer is “considering next steps for the IP.”

Sources also told THR that the ending “is not intended to set up any future stories ‘at this time.’”

It doesn’t sound like creator Hwang Dong-hyuk will be involved.

“I think the story ended in a manner where it doesn’t need a further story to be told. So I am not too interested in telling a story that continues on from the conclusion. If I were to do a spinoff someday, I think I would rather choose to go back and see what happened during that time gap [between seasons one and two]. But this is something that we are just tossing around, so as for when or how a spinoff might come about, it’s still up in the air,” he told THR.

The creator previously explained why he ended the show with season three.
