Squid Game & Love Island USA Top Nielsen Streaming Charts Over July 4

Americans celebrated Independence Day this year by once again watching loads of television. Last year, every single overall Top 10 title reached 1B+ minutes streamed during the holiday week and, while that didn’t quite happen this time around, Nielsen says audiences actually spent 8% more time watching TV.

Squid Game unsurprisingly took the cake as the No. 1 title with nearly 2.9B minutes viewed, thanks to the arrival of the third and final season.

As Love Island USA neared the end of its seventh season, that series notched an impressive 1.7B minutes viewed, which was good enough for second place. Compared to last year, that’s a 189% boost in viewing for Peacock the week of July 4.

On the heels of the release of The Bear Season 4, the Hulu series put up 892M minutes viewed, placing seventh on the overall list but third among original programming, illustrating that as always audiences gravitated toward acquired content.

On the theme of U.S. politics, Prime Video premiered Heads of State to 1.1B minutes viewed, good enough for first in movies and fifth overall. Also, 1996 sci-fi thriller Independence Day crept up to No. 8 on the movies chart with 297M minutes. Per Nielsen, adults 35-64 made up 55% of the audience.

As for the streaming originals front, Ironheart had a nice finish with 536M minutes viewed the week that the final three episodes dropped. Prime Video’s We Were Liars also made the original chart with 328M minutes viewed.

And fresh off of its pay-one window, Sinners hit the movies list at No. 4, raking in 555M minutes viewed after landing on HBO Max on July 4. Per Nielsen, 56% of the total came from the adult 18-49 demo.
