2022 was a big year for television, with a slew of incredible shows released across the numerous platforms available for our enjoyment. Particularly exciting for us at Nerdist were the many Primetime Emmy nominations received by genre shows. Some of our favorite TV series from the year, like Severance, Stranger Things, What We Do in the Shadows, and Yellowjackets, received nods across Emmy categories. Ultimately, a few shows, like Squid Game and Ted Lasso, took home some of the big prizes. But overall, the Emmys went in other directions. When it comes to more genre winners, Squid Game and Ted Lasso did us proud. Squid Game won historical Emmys in the categories of “Lead Actor in a Drama Series,” won by Lee Jung-jae, and “Directing for a Drama Series,” won by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Meanwhile, Ted Lasso received Emmys for “Lead Actor in a Comedy Series,” won by Jason Sudeikis, “Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series,” won by Brett Goldstein, and “Best Comedy Series” for the show overall.
We were sad to see that some series we absolutely love, like Severance and Yellowjackets, did not get further recognition this Emmy season. However, we remain thrilled about their nominations. In the past, genre shows like these two may not have gotten any honors at all. Our fingers are crossed for future wins. Though we want to extend congratulations to the other excellent shows recognized at the Emmys, especially Abbott Elementary.
In the area of Creative Arts Emmys, genre shows scored a few more wins. Among other shows, Moon Knight and What If… took home wins for “Outstanding Sound Editing For A Limited Or Anthology Series, Movie Or Special” and “Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance,” won by the late Chadwick Boseman, respectively. Netflix’s Arcane, Stranger Things, and Love, Death + Robots, as well as Apple TV+’s Severance, also came away with wins for Creative Arts Emmys.
