Spotify responds to security hack rumors as app goes down worldwide

Spotify Status Update

Popular music streaming service Spotify has responded to claims it’s been hacked after the platform became inaccessible to users around the world.

Spotify launched back in 2008 as one of the first dedicated music streaming sites, and has continued to dominate the market ever since.

The streaming platform has expanded to podcasts and audiobooks over the years, amassing over 640,000,000 monthly active users in the process.

So when it went down for users worldwide on April 16, thousands flocked to social media to try to figure out what was going on.

Spotify responds to rumors of security hack

The service outage began in the early morning of Wednesday, April 16, and prompted Spotify to quickly update users on X.

“We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!” they said in a post. However, many began speculating that Spotify had been hacked and questioned whether or not their information was safe.

Two hours later, the company issued another update to users that debunked those rumors.

“We are aware of the outage and working to resolve it as soon as possible. The reports of this being a security hack are false.”

It’s unknown when Spotify will be able to restore service to its apps, which are down for hundreds of thousands of users.

This comes just a day after 4Chan was taken offline due to reports of it being hacked. The hacker reportedly accessed the website’s hosting server, and leaked emails of the site’s moderation team and many of its registered users.

On top of that, it was reported that moderators had access to a special internal tool that let them access location, IP address, and other info of the website’s anonymous users.

It’s unknown how long the website will be down for, but users are still reporting that it’s inaccessible over a day later.
