Given its heavy dose of cameos and surprises, Spider-Man: No Way Home was already considered to be something of a “Reddit movie,” which is a dismissive term for a film that builds its story based on fan theories. According to director Jon Watts, however, it turns out that Spider-Man: No Way Home was literally influenced by Reddit.
During a recent panel at the Mediterrane Film Festival in Malta, Jon Watts — who directed the first three Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man movies but will not be helming the fourth — explained how reading Reddit posts influenced his decision-making about the story in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“What I found more compelling, the scene that you just saw, that’s when we first revealed the other two Spider-Men. There had been rumors that Tobey and Andrew were going to be in the movie, and this is while we’re shooting. It’s another example of how you can have a script that’s working, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. You can keep making it better. We were writing the script, and we were working on where we wanted to reveal the guys, and it always seemed like Peter’s going to be sad because Aunt May has just died, and that the portals are going to open, and the two Spider-Men are going to step out,” Watts said.
“It’s probably a rooftop somewhere. It’s all sort of hazy. You’re still trying to figure it out. Then I was on Reddit, and I was looking at people who had already made fan art of, ‘This is probably what it’s going to be like when the two Spider-Men get revealed.’ It was on a rooftop. It was sad, two Doctor Strange portals were open and two Spider-Men are stepping out. I was like, ‘Well, we can’t do that. If that’s exactly what everyone thinks we’re going to do, we absolutely can’t do that.”
Ahead of its currently scheduled release on July 31 2026, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has begun its casting process as it gears up for production, which will likely begin as soon as Holland finishes up his work on Christoper Nolan’s The Odyssey.
In addition to Holland as Spidey, it’s been confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will also see Zendaya and Jacob Batalon returning. Additional cast members include Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher and newcomers to the MCU such as Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios.
According to IMDB, the plot synopsis for the film is as follows:
“After the world has forgotten his name, Peter Parker begins a new chapter in his life-balancing college classes, part-time work, and his responsibility as New York’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. But when a mysterious force begins to unravel the city from the inside out, Peter finds himself caught between powerful enemies, old legacies, and unexpected allies. As shadows from the past creep into his present, he must redefine what it truly means to be a hero-on his own.”
Next up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which hits theaters on July 25 and is set to be the first movie in the franchise’s “Phase Six,” which will also feature Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
