Many dog owners are very aware that their pets are food-motivated, a trait that can come in useful when training but can also create plenty of headaches. That includes one that a family in South Dakota had to deal with after realizing their Great Pyrenees had managed to sneak out of their house in the middle of the night in his quest to get a breakfast burrito.
Taking care of a dog can be an incredibly fulfilling experience, but it can also be an incredibly stressful one thanks to the many, many ways the animals can get themselves into trouble.
It’s easier than ever to keep tabs on your dog’s location thanks to the wide variety of GPS trackers you can affix to their collar, but that only does so much to reduce the anxiety that comes with realizing they’ve managed to escape.
According to The New York Post, Sara Olson, the “dog mom” of Max, a Great Pyrenees who lives with her family in Langford, South Dakota, woke up on June 1st and realized he was nowhere to be found before taking a look at the location updates she received on the app connected to a tracker he wears.
She was able to take some solace in the fact that Max had ended up at the home of her 16-year-old daughter’s boyfriend while deducing he snuck out of the house shortly after her child had returned home around 11:30 the previous night.
However, she noticed the final destination wasn’t his initial one, as she was able to track where he went in the wake of his escape and discovered he had spent two hours making the nearly five-mile trek to a convenience store where Max had previously received a breakfast burrito as a treat.
The data showed Max (a stray they rescued in 2023 ) spent five hours sitting outside the store waiting for it to open before heading to the home of the aforementioned boyfriend. That was also a surprising development when you consider Olsen noted he’d never been to the house, surmising he was able to get there based on scent.
Max got back safely, and Olsen says they’ve started feeding him breakfast burritos to prevent a repeat incident.
