Someone paid over $8,000 for Michael Jackson’s dirty sock from 1997

A single, rhinestone-covered sock worn by Michael Jackson during a 1997 concert in France has sold for a whopping amount at a thriller of an auction despite being stained, yellowed, and discarded after the show.

The sock, worn during Jackson’s HIStory World Tour, was recovered by a technician who found it tossed near the pop icon’s dressing room following his performance in Nîmes, southern France. He then put it in a frame, accompanied by his backstage pass.

Decades later, the off-white sock is visibly aged and marked, with its once-sparkling rhinestones dulled by time.

But that didn’t stop bidders from driving the price well above its original $3,400–$4,500 estimate, according to French auctioneer Aurore Illy.

Michael Jackson’s dirty sock sells for $8,822

The sock ended up selling for a whopping $8,822 at the Nimes auction house, far exceeding expectations.

“It really is an exceptional object — even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,” Illy said.

Michael Jackson’s sock was found by a stage technician.

Jackson famously wore glittery white socks during his performance of Billie Jean, including in the viral clips from the 1997 tour.

This isn’t the first time MJ memorabilia has commanded jaw-dropping prices. In 2009, a Macau gaming resort shelled out $350,000 for the glove Jackson wore during his first-ever moonwalk in 1983.

It’s unclear what the dirty sock smells like or if wearing it will give its new owner the ability to moonwalk like Mike.
