Saturday Night Live writer Josh Patten has a very different interpretation of “God’s Country” when compared to Morgan Wallen. The former fired back at the latter over his controversial and subsequent post to Instagram with a direct jab on the same social media platform.
Unfortunately, nobody outside of the entertainment industry knew who Patten was prior to this latest saga so it doesn’t hit quite as hard… However, there is still humor in his not-so-subtle rebuttal.
Wallen, the biggest name in country music, often gets himself into unnecessary trouble. His publicist must lack sleep as someone who is constantly on edge about his superstar client’s next move. The most recent incident (for lack of better word) took place just after midnight on early Sunday morning.
Saturday Night Live invited Morgan Wallen to perform as the musical guest on Saturday’s episode. Mikey Madison of Anora fame was the host.
First and foremost, Wallen gave a shoutout to the Lord (and the Vols) after one of his two songs. No big deal. God is good, all the time. And all the time, God is good.
Morgan Wallen closes out his SNL performance by giving glory to God—snubbing Hollywood’s anti-Christ bias.

With that being said, Wallen’s societal and religious views likely do not match that of the cast at 30 Rock. That is also true about its primary audience. I would not be surprised if the pious affirmation was an intentional poke at the perspective of SNL as a whole. Maybe not. He loves the Lord. That’s cool.
What happened next was the real point of contention.
Morgan Wallen immediately walked off of the stage as soon as the credits started to roll. He did not stick around to shake the hands or hug the cast members, which is pretty standard protocol at this point. Nor did he even stick around long enough to smile through the closing credits. He just walked out right in front of the camera, which left Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim completely shook.

Technically speaking, Wallen did not have to stay any longer. SNL paid him to perform. The show was over. Obligation fulfilled. Time to go home.
Or maybe he did not know the cameras were still rolling. That is a real possibility!
I doubt it based on his post to Instagram shortly thereafter…
The 31-year-old posted a photo from inside his private jet looking out at the airport in New York City. The caption read: “Get me to God’s country,” referring to the South. Wallen couldn’t wait to get out of the Big Apple. Its overwhelming political lean likely had something to do with his desire to leave.
In response to Wallen’s post, Josh Patten shared his own thoughts about what “God’s country” looks like. Patten has been a writer on SNL since 2012 for 236 episodes.

The post is a funny rebuttal to Morgan Wallen. Except Wallen has 8.3 million followers on Instagram and Patten has just 2,414 so it does not hit quite as hard.
And yet, even though Patten’s following is tiny compared to Wallen’s, the people who follow Wallen were all riled up by Patten’s post after it went viral on social media. And if we know anything about the hierarchy of social media, memes take awhile to get to Facebook so there is still a whole group of people who have yet to see the response. The memes are flying on X, formerly Twitter!

This post might even be your first introduction to the drama!
Where does this go from here? Probably nowhere. Everybody will move on in a few days. That will be the end of the conversation… unless SNL decides to keep Wallen’s name in its mouth and pokes fun at him on the next episode. That would be pretty funny but maybe they don’t want to give him the time of day— even though that is exactly what Patten did with his post. We’ll see.
