Nearly five years after suffering a major stroke, Sinbad has returned to acting with his with a role in Tyler Perry’s film Straw.
Straw is a thriller film directed by Perry that debuted on Netflix on June 6th, starring Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Rockmond Dunbar, Glynn Turman, and more. In it, Sinbad portrays Benny, the sympathetic neighbor of the protagonist Janiyah (Henson).
It marks the comedian’s first major on-screen appearance since prior to suffering a stroke in October 2020, which was followed by nine months in the hospital re-learning how to walk. In March 2024, he made his first public appearance after the incident, appearing with his former co-stars from A Different World for a virtual reunion event, and posting a statement to Instagram thanking well-wishers for their support.

In that same Instagram statement, Sinbad told fans to “expect to see more of me soon.” Now, he’s returned, in part thanks to Perry. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about having him as part of the cast, Perry recently said, “It’s so important to me, as a man, that men want to support and take care of their families. I know it’s been really difficult for him, so to give him this opportunity made me feel amazing. I’m really excited for him. And he delivered.”
In his own statement posted to Instagram, Sinbad thanked Perry “for giving me this incredible opportunity at such a pivotal time in my life.”
Continuing, he said, “I don’t have the words to express how much this means to me and my family,” and then addressed Perry and his castmates directly, expressing his admiration. “Seeing how you work and interact with your cast and crew was inspiring. It’s been the best experience on a movie set since I came to Hollywood. [Henson] got me sitting here crying like a baby. [Sherrie Shepherd] you know what you did.
