The papal conclave is officially underway at The Vatican and the Cardinals are being forced to “rawdog” the entire secret ballot process because of signal-jamming technology. That is the exact wording used by CBS on Wednesday.
Tony Dokoupil took a bold risk in trying to relate to the youth and made it super awkward!
As you could imagine, the papal conclave is a very secretive operation. The College of Cardinals gather inside the Sistine Chapel to appoint the Bishop of Rome, more commonly known as the pope. They are locked in seclusion cum clave (with a key) and they are not permitted to leave until a new pope has been elected.
This process first began in the year 1274 AD. Technology did not exist at the time. Society obviously looks very different today than they did more than 700 years ago but the secrecy has not changed.
The Vatican goes to extreme efforts to keep the voting process completely confidential. No information will leak.
First and foremost, all of the cardinals’ mobile phones are handed over prior to the conclave and will not be returned until the conclave has ended. To go even one step further, the Vatican also uses signal-jamming technology around the Sistine Chapel to prevent electronic surveillance or communication. Phone signal was completely cut off at 3:00 p.m. local time prior to the first vote.
As CBS explained what was happening, Tony Dokoupil made a quip about how the cardinals were “rawdogging” the conclave. It is a term that Gen Z often uses to describe a situation where they are without their phone. However, we all know what that really means…
Dokoupil’s cohosts could not stifle their laughter when he said it— because it was hilarious. Whoops!
