Controversial, mercurial but undeniably talented actor Shia LaBeouf, now 38 years old, is once again attempting to mount a comeback as he’s starring in the indie film Henry Johnson, the first movie from acclaimed playwright David Mamet in almost 20 years.
Shia LaBeouf has had a turbulent Hollywood career, to say the least, as he’s gone from being a child star, to being the next big thing (Transformers era), to crashing out due to personal and substance abuse issues, to making a comeback (Peanut Butter Falcon and Honey Boy era), to being canceled again. Having starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis last year, LaBeouf now has two films set to release this year: Henry Johnson and Salvable.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the film’s release on May 9, LaBeouf discussed his journey to getting sober, and credited Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Sam Rockwell, and James Brolin (not Josh) with helping him along the way, which is an insane list of actors both in terms of how famous they are (between them, they have five Academy Awards) and how intense of performers they all are
Just imagine Shia LaBeouf, Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Sam Rockwell and James Brolin in a room together talking about getting sober. Sheesh.
“Yeah. Very close [with Mel Gibson still]. Big respect, big love. He’s always been very lovely to me. He held my hand when I was really shitting on myself. Dude really stepped up for me in big ways. Him, Sean Penn, James Brolin — these guys got me to sobriety. They got around me and kept me alive,” LaBeouf said.
“Sean also showed up and motivated me to do this as a play. I was scared as f— when this thing started. He was there week one. Sam Rockwell came. There was a bunch of guys that I looked up to that just started popping up. I had never, ever felt that kind of love — not like that.” [via The Hollywood Reporter]
It’s actually not that difficult to imagine Sam Rockwell, in particular, talking about sobriety, as his character’s monologue about it in season three of The White Lotus was one of the highlights of the season.
